Why did I choose my major?

Hello again, ever since I can remember until I was 16 years old, I wanted to study veterinary medicine. I have always loved animals too much, in fact, you could say that I have a zoo in my house now. I have 3 dogs, 2 cats, a hen, 3 birds, and I have had mice, a ferret, pigeon and other animals. I realized that I didn't really like the career because they touched on topics that saddened me a lot. My aunt's boyfriend, who is a veterinarian, guided me and told me about his experience studying and practicing his profession, which led me to the conclusion that studying my dream career was not going to turn out well.

So I had to find other options.

I finished high school in 2020 and decided to take a year off because I didn't know what else to study besides veterinary medicine. After researching careers related to the environment (because I have always loved nature), I became interested in agronomy. I attended several talks where I realized that it wasn't for me... but in one of them, I learned about the existence of forestry engineering. I was given a tour of the forestry science faculty facilities, which made me fall in love with the career. Before the talk, I had prejudices against it because I often heard that forestry engineers caused more harm to ecosystems because they only focused on industrial issues. But after getting more information, I realized that they teach all the topics I like: the plant, animal, and fungal kingdoms and their relationship with the environment. 😉 and they had many practices.

Despite loving the career, the academic workload from university has made me cry many times. Sometimes I have questioned whether to continue studying or not because it causes me a lot of anxiety and leaves me with no time for anything other than studying. However, as I said before, I am passionate about the subjects covered in the program and knowing that I can contribute to solving socio-environmental problems keeps me going.
